Tacoma puts prints in the picture

'Ink This!', an exhibition of Print arts by artists in the Northwest, is currently being featured at the Tacoma Arts Gallery, having opened its doors last month.

According to the Seattle Times, the show features linocuts, accordion Books, letterpress prints, collages, Posters, and installations. Susan Lowdermilk has even created a zoetrope (a pre-cinema motion sequence device) that can be spun, sending rocking horse prints into rapid motion.

Print art can be high-tech, low-tech, or a combination of both. Artists represented in the show have embraced the many different ways this medium can be approached.

Frank Janzen creates single prints, called monotypes, out of smoke on paper, while Kathleen Rabel’s creations are loosely structured images that utilize a combination of woodcut and etching. Robert C. Jones, meanwhile, has a piece that involves re-inking, rotating, and then re-running a single plate. The wall text accompanying the artwork points out that master printers do not recommend this procedure.

Elsewhere in the exhibit, Jon Fedderson has created a relief Print entitled ‘Roll Call II’, which features a layered background similar to the basket textures crafted by the Lakes and Okanagan peoples, who are among Fedderson’s ancestors. Also, artists Julie Chen and Barb Tetenbaum collaborated on a piece that draws on concepts around archiving and communication.

The show runs at the Tacoma Art Museum through November 9, and will no doubt be of interest to people working for graphic design, illustration, or Print companies.
