Among the items which can be dropped off by residents include Styrofoam coolers, Packaging sheets, and rigid foam Packaging blocks. Not accepted are dirty or contaminated foam, Styrofoam food containers, and packing peanuts. Once collected, the densifier then processes the material which is compressed into solid blocks. A recycling facility in Kent accepts the blocks which are then prepared for manufacturing into new products.
Mayor Anders Ibsen said that this goes a long way to making the city cleaner. He added that this is a practical step in strengthening the recycling efforts of the city and reducing waste.
John Hines, a Council member from District 1, said:
“bringing back our ability to recycle Styrofoam is a huge win for Tacoma.”
He added that the residents of the city do a great deal of recycling and have waited for a long time for the return of this service. He encouraged all residents to drop off their so the city can stay beautiful, healthy, and clean for many years in the future.
