Glass museum in Tacoma undertakes major capital project

The Museum of Glass is planning to expand with a new art space. The museum currently has the most active and largest glass studio on the West Coast.

Beginning in the second quarter of this year, the museum is planning a capital renovation project that will expand the artistic offerings in the area.

Its gallery spaces will be expanded, improved, and modernized to celebrate its pioneering artists, present a more interdisciplinary and thorough perspective on the art form, exhibit more work from emerging and established artists. There will be a new immersive gallery for the collection of Lino Tagliapietra, which is comprised of 175 works recently gifted to the museum by the artist, considered the foremost glassblower in the world.

The project will include sophisticated casework, new state-of-the-art lighting, improved environmental controls, and interactive visual and audio components. The new modern design will enhance the flow of visitors and feature additional aesthetic improvements. The internal workshops of the museum will be relocated, and an on-site storage facility will be built to facilitate the growth of the permanent collection. Work on the substructure will be performed to support these additions and to protect the site.

More details on such projects is often disseminated throughout a community with flyer printing.

Construction is expected to take about six months. The traditional gallery spaces of the museum will be closed during this time while educational programs and smaller exhibitions will continue.
