What's Happening in Tacoma, WA…

Tacoma and Seattle ports make an alliance

The Tacoma and Seattle port commissions have voted to unify their marine cargo sections.

As a result, the Northwest Seaport Alliance (NSA) has been formed. The vote was carried unanimously and new digital business cards from Tacoma could be required as a result.

The move was triggered by intensifying competition from other ports. Don Johnson, the commission president of the port of Tacoma, has released a statement about the move:

“We have moved from fierce competitors to bold collaborators. We recognize how critical the maritime industry is to our state’s economy, and we are proud and excited to strengthen it even more.”

The ports have not become the same organization, but it was felt that a new policy was needed because of mounting pressure from Southern California and British Columbia. While the two ports have continued the ownership of their separate assets, a new management structure has been developed.

It has been decided that the auto, container and break-bulk terminals are now to be managed by the joint authority. In addition, some other bulk terminals will come under the same umbrella.

However, the alliance is far from comprehensive. For example, its remit does not include the cruise business, the airport, or the marinas. Further, some real estate and grain terminals are also excluded from the deal.

John Wolfe has been recruited to lead the organizations in a transitional phase of the alliance. Mr. Wolfe has been the chief executive in Tacoma for some time.
