Special exhibit to open at museum in Tacoma

A new exhibit will be opening at the Tacoma Art Museum later this month.

It will feature the work of 21 alumni artists whose work challenges notions of which artists should be featuring in museums and galleries. The exhibit, titled “GATHER: 27 Years of Hilltop Artists,” is comprised of the work of primarily artists of color and will highlight the Hilltop Artists program, as well as the opportunity gaps these artists often face. Local Print shops are frequently called upon for such exhibits to create Books and other printed materials featuring the work of participating artists.

There are over 30 pieces in the exhibit in various media, ranging from paintings and mixed media to neon and blown glass. An alumnus of the Hilltop Artists and current Teaching Artist and Hot Shop Manager, Trenton Quiocho, curated the exhibit with assistance from the Executive Director of the Hilltop Artists, Dr. Kimberly Keith. Keith said that the show is about representation, adding that this is an exhibit where artists have the chance to demonstrate their talents and some introduce some voice in the narrative.

Leadership Sponsors of the exhibit include Tacoma Creates and ArtsFund, with the additional support of the Tacoma Public Schools, the Marie Lamfrom Foundation, and the Dale and Leslie Chihuly Foundation.

The exhibit opens on Saturday, March 26 and runs through Sunday, September 4.
