Publicly owned broadband could be coming to Tacoma

If things go as planned, Tacoma residents could soon have access to a broadband internet service provider that is owned by the people.

According to the Tacoma Public Utilities Board Chairman Bryan Flint, the city needs to change its current model when it comes to providing internet service in order to keep up with the times.

There are two different tacks that it could take. The first would be to lease the current Click! network to a private enterprise, which could then provide all internet and cable services, while the city would still retain ownership of the network itself. The second possibility would be for Tacoma to transform Click! so that it has an option for broadband internet for those who wish to have it.

Flint went on to say that he feels an internet utility that is owned by the public is a good idea for all involved. The rates could be kept low, as it would not be operating on a for-profit basis. He feels that this will also be an incentive for other service providers to keep their rates low as well. Whatever decision the city comes to, a Direct Mail printing firm can produce informational materials that will explain it to the public, and give advice on how they can make it work for them.

He pointed out that no matter what, Tacoma residents will have access to lower priced internet service.
