Low income housing project to be developed in Tacoma

New Life Homes, a low-income housing project of 60 units will be built in the Hilltop neighborhood in Tacoma.

Shiloh Baptist Church is the developer and sponsor of the project with Beacon Development Group serving as a consultant. Schemata Workshop is the architect, and the builder is Marpac.

The project is next to Shiloh Baptist Church on South 13th Street and replaces two houses previously owned by the church. Among the supportive services provided by the development will be skill development and creating opportunities for education and growth. These will be provided by Believing In Myself Again (BIMA) Services and the federal Department of Veterans Affairs in coordination with BIMA.

This project is designed to address the need for affordable housing for those who have been homeless. Veterans who earn not more than 30 to 50 percent of the median income in the area, those leaving the criminal justice system, and those recovering from treatment for substance abuse.

This project will be financed primarily by KeyBank Community Development Lending and Investment (CDLI) in the amount of $14.6 million. Additional public funding sources, tax credits, and traditional financing have been leveraged by the church and the Tacoma Housing Authority to cover the costs of the project.
