The new Fawcett Elementary School is now open in Tacoma. The original building from 1950 had been demolished and was rebuilt.
Natural light can shine throughout the building due to large windows throughout the school. Teachers were able to design their own classrooms with new materials and furniture.
There are also displays of art around the school that include history lessons, fine art, and a mural. The new library is on the upper level of the school. A gymnasium will be used for physical education and other activities. There is a large outdoor play area behind the building as well as a playground and a field with turf.
The school has multiple levels of access with a vestibule and security cameras. Principal Erin Curtiss said there are three exits from which people cannot get into the school where the students are, which enables the school to have the most up-to-date security.
The school also has spaces for different kinds of learning. There is a lab for science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics that is designed for students with interests in these fields of study.
Flyer printing is one way residents of a community can be informed of such new schools and their features.
The school was the fourth such school to benefit from a Tacoma Schools construction bond of $535m for the rebuilding and renovation of eight schools in the district.
