New police chief takes over in Tacoma

The Tacoma Police Department has a new chief of police.

Avery Moore has been sworn in as chief of police by the Tacoma City Council. Elizabeth Paul, Tacoma City Manager, selected him and Victoria Woodards, mayor of the city, confirmed her selection. Keith Blocker, deputy mayor, this selection was monumental as the city endeavors to transform the police department in the city. Announcements of such important appointments are often made known throughout a community with banner printing.

Moore expressed his gratitude for the appointment and is looking forward to turning the many challenges in the city into opportunities. Moore was assistant chief of police for the Dallas Police Department for the Investigations Bureau and began his career in the Texas city. He has had several leadership roles while serving the city of Dallas.

The other finalists for the position were Kathy McAlpine, chief of the Tigard Police Department; Captain Sean Case with the Anchorage Police Department; and Michael Carroll, who is retired from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office. All four candidates underwent a long recruitment process during which they were interviewed not only by the city council, but the entire community.

Moore takes over from Mike Ake who had been serving as interim chief of police after Don Ramsdell retired in December 2020. He had served as chief since 2003.
