New education degree to be offered in Tacoma

The University of Washington Tacoma School of Education will be offering a new four-year degree in education.

Professor Julia Aguirre, who oversees teaching certifications at the University, said that there will be at least 20 students in the first cohort of the program, which will start in the fall quarter of this academic year. The program requires students to take three courses of an introductory nature—one in ethnic studies, one in psychology, and a third as a service-learning course in education. Starting in the spring quarter of their third year, students will begin working together as a cohort. There will be an opportunity for students to teach in local schools in their final year. More details about such programs are often provided with brochure printing services.

The program will also enable students to pursue a dual certification in kindergarten through grade eight elementary education, with a second endorsement for kindergarten through grade 12 in either teaching English-language learners or special education. Aguirre said these are areas of greatest need in the state.

Aguirre said there will be a great deal of support for the students through the cohort model. She added that other unique features of the program include providing students with dedicated academic advisors, as well as a support team in the Office of Field Placements and Partnerships to assist them with finding teaching positions once they graduate.
