Soul music with an accent on the way to San Diego

A band whose members love the “sweet soul” music of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s is on the way to San Diego.

Los Yesterdays are based in Los Angeles, and are a Chicano soul band created by the collaboration between Vicor Benavides and Gabriel Rowland. The two relate that they grew up with Black music of earlier decades thanks to parents who loved it and played it often. Their interest in the genre reflects the fact that many Latino listeners were drawn to Black music in the 1950s, and never lost that interest.

Benavides and Rowland note that when they were children, their neighbors were Black, Asian, immigrants, Latinos, low-income Whites, and others whose income meant they lived where they could afford to live. This forced proximity created mutual understanding and led to fans supporting Latino groups like Cannibal & The Headhunters while also appreciating Black groups like The Coasters.

Also on the program are Johnny Ruiz and The Escapers, a sextet that first got together in 2017 in Las Vegas. Like Los Yesterdays, they lean into that sweet soul sound of earlier decades.

The performance is scheduled for Thursday, July 16 at the Music Box on India Street. Shows like this can be promoted effectively when organizers use poster printing to create advertising for them.
