Mermaid race planned in San Diego

A women’s race is coming up soon in San Diego.

The Mermaid Half-Marathon will be held soon on Mission Bay in San Diego, where women will have their choice of a 5K, 10K or half-marathon.

The San Diego races are part of the ongoing Mermaid Series, which encourages women to run so they can enjoy the feeling of crossing the finish line. The first Mermaid event was a women’s duathlon and triathlon held in 2004. A second event was held the following year, establishing the mermaid Series. It continues to this day, supporting women.

The half-marathon is tentatively set to begin at 7.00 am, the 10K at 7.15 am, and the 5K at 7.30 am. The races will begin at South Shores Park, with Tecolote Shores as the finish line.

A Mermaid Dash is scheduled for smaller fish, and this route begins and ends at Tecolote Shores North, indicated by purple teardrop flags. The dash covers 1.5 miles, with the race for those ages 9 – 12 beginning at 9.45 am, and starting at 9.50 am for those ages 6 – 8. When they plan events like this, organizers will often work with banner printing to create course markers, which could include flags like those to be used in San Diego.

The Mermaid Half-Marathon and the other races are scheduled for March 25. The fee is $20 on the day of the race, but tickets purchased earlier online are $15. The fee includes a necklace and medal, but not a t-shirt.
