Journalist Heather Rudow described the work of Tank and the Bangas as a:
“. . . lively fusion of funk, soul, hip hop, rock, and spoken word.”
The musicians themselves say they identify with a wide number of genres including gospel, folk, rock, and “Soulful Disney,” a new slant on the entertainment giant envisioned by Anjelika “Jelly Joseph,” who sings backup when the band performs live. The band was founded in 2011 in New Orleans, and comprises keyboardist Merell Burkett, bassist and synth Norman Spence, Albert Allenback on sax and flute, drummer Joshua Johnson, and Tank herself (Tarriona “Tank” Ball), handling the duties as lead vocalist.
The word “joy” is often used to describe a performance by Tank and the Bangas, along with “magical” and “childlike.” In 2017, the group won the NPR Tiny Desk Contest, and were nominated as “Best New Artist” in 2019, in time for the 2020 Grammys. To date, they have dropped three studio albums: 2013’s “Thinktank,” “Green Balloon” in 2019, and “Red Balloon” in 2022.
Tank and the Bangas will be at the Music Box on January 26, along with Austin Brown, a Grammy-nominated writer, producer, and musician from L.A. whose goal is to use music to create a safe and inclusive space for everyone.
