Sensory-friendly pediatric wing opens in Henrico

Trips to the emergency room tend to be overwhelming, but it will be a little easier for those with special needs in Henrico County.

The Henrico Doctors’ Hospital near Glen Allen just opened a new pediatric wing. This wing is set up to make it friendly for sensory-sensitive children that need care. Patients with autism will be helped by special Notebooks to assist them with communication and given the chance to dim the LED lights. Patients will also have access to noise-canceling headphones and weighted blankets. Promotional Products such as blankets and stuffed toys would be well received.

Each room will be monitored by certified child specialists and the other staff members will be trained on how to work with children suffering from sensory issues. Dr. Kevin Connelly, who is the hospital’s Medical Director of Pediatric ER, explained:

“It can be a very scary place for kids. The sights, the sounds, the smells, people telling you what to do. You are out of your elements and we wanted to make it a friendly place for them. Why shouldn’t we make [accommodations] for people with sensory challenges?”

Dr. Connolly also stated how the hospital is taking other measures to accommodate every child by getting rid of any unnecessary sources of sensory stimulation in the hospital so that it is a comfortable place for patients on the autism spectrum and for their families.
