Absentee voting now available to all
Registered voters are now allowed to vote in absentia without giving a reason.
The change means that Virginia’s registered votes can use an absentee ballot for the general election on November 3. Governor Ralph Norman and the 2020 General Assembly pushed through legislation which gives all voters the right to absentee vote. This option was previously only available to people who could not vote in person because of business, education, or military service.
People from Glen Allen can register at the Office of Voter Registration and Elections in Henrico. Officials here have received tens of thousands of requests from people who want absentee ballots. In 2012 and 2016, the number of absentee ballots for the presidential elections from Henrico County was 15,000 and 17,000 respectively. Ballots can be printed on stationery printers.
The changes to the procedure were made so that people feel that they are able to cast their votes safely. According to Mark Coakley, the general registrar for Henrico County, voters will now be able to vote whenever they want, although he feels that absentee ballots should be mailed in sooner rather than later. This will help officials deal with the high number of ballots that will be submitted right before November 3.
Voters choosing to use an absentee ballot will complete the ballots at home and then send them in by mail or drop them off in person at the government centers in Henrico.
