College in Columbia partners on teaching fellowship
The South Carolina Teaching Fellows program has selected Newberry College and Columbia College to host the program together; the program will start next year.
The Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention and Advancement administers the fellowship and recruits high school seniors to become teachers in South Carolina. The fellowship is highly selective and is hosted by 14 other institutions of higher education across the state.
Fellowships are given to prospective college students who have demonstrated service to their community and school, academic achievement, and a desire to teach in the state. Once these students begin their academic journey at their selected college, Teaching Fellows participate in advanced programs for enrichment with unique opportunities for leadership and professional development. Up to $24,000 is given to each fellow, or up to $6,000 per year for four years, toward completion of their degree. Upon graduation, fellows agree to teach in a public school in South Carolian for one year for each year for which they received the fellowship.
Such programs often use brochure printing to offer details about their requirements and benefits.
Dean of the Division of Education at Columbia College, Dr. Tracy West, said that Teaching Fellows has played an important role in preparing educators in the Division of Education at the college. She expressed her excitement about continuing to bring this opportunity to students and partnering with Newberry College.
