Neighborhood in Columbia area set for transformation

An investment of $15 million will be made in the Mill Village neighborhood of West Columbia.

This project will upgrade the area to include storm drainage improvements, infrastructure replacements, and enhancements for the safety of pedestrians and to traffic flow. Joseph Dickey, West Columbia Councilman, said that these will improve the area by replacing infrastructure that is old, such as the water system, and improve roads to enhance pedestrian safety, walkability, and traffic flow.

The main roads that will be affected as part of this project include the North and South Alley Ways, Alexander Road, and Oliver Street. Parking on the street will also be added as part of this project.

Assistance in spreading the word about such improvements in roads and infrastructure can be done by local Print shops with Flyers and other printed materials.

Funding for most of the project will come from grants awarded to West Columbia by the state. The utility capital improvement plan of the city will cover the remainder of the costs.

Residents are being advised by leaders of the city to prepare for possible detours and congestion during the construction. Dickey advised residents to be patient with the city as once everyone gets through the project the improved infrastructure will improve the living experience for everyone in the community.

Construction is scheduled to begin this fall and to take a year and half to complete.
