A new exhibit titled “American Battleground: South Carolina’s Revolution” is at the State Museum in Columbia.
It is the first major exhibition developed and produced under the Reimagine the Experience initiative, which is designed to revitalize over 150,000 square feet of gallery space with immersive multimedia features and updated exhibitions. The executive director of the museum, Amy Bartow-Melia, said the cost of these renovations is $75m, and it was accelerated so it could be open as part of the county’s America 250 celebrations.
The exhibit uses dramatic visuals, historic artifacts, and immersive multimedia to trace the transformation of South Carolina from a successful British colony into one of the most critical battlegrounds in the war. Visitors will encounter both familiar figures and events, as well as surprising, lesser-known stories that underscore the state’s importance to the war and the birth of the nation.
A highlight of the show is the interactive map of battle stations, which highlights the conflict by enabling the explorations of hundreds of skirmishes and battles across South Carolina through dynamic technology and storytelling.
The exhibition also examines the Revolutionary War’s profound effects on everyday citizens, revealing how the war carried vastly different meanings for different groups.
