The city of Columbia has opened applications for its next Poet Laureate.
This is a position that is honorary and will recognize a poet who increases engagement with poetry across the city and is a champion of poetry. One Columbia for Arts and Culture is the organization that is inviting poets from the city to apply for this position. The application is available online on their website.
Local Print shops can help spread the word about such open positions with Flyers, mailers, and other printed materials.
There will be a selection committee that will include members of the local literary arts community, representatives from the office of the mayor and the Arts, History and Preservation Committee, and other people with relevant expertise. They will meet to review the applications and identify that person who is the strongest choice to promote literature and poetry throughout the city the month after the applications are due. The new poet laureate will be announced at event held by One Columbia the following month.
The current poet laureate for Columbia is Jennifer Bartell Boykin who has served since 2023. While she was Poet Laureate, she founded the Soda City Poetry Festival and when Finlay Park opened in 2025, she wrote a poem for its grand opening. She has held many workshops on poetry throughout the city and the state.
Applications for Poet Laureate are due by midnight, Saturday September 5.
