A new standalone hospital of the University of South Carolina (USC) will be coming to downtown Columbia.
The facility is expected to cost around $350 million to build and will be the first of its kind in the state. Its focus will be on treating the nervous system and diseases of the brain, as well as advanced neurosurgery and neurological treatments and rehabilitation for conditions like cancer, stroke, and trauma conditions.
It will have 115 beds for patient care. It will also have spaces for laboratories and clinical research and study training for students at USC who are studying pharmacy, nursing, speech and physical therapy, and medicine, among other subjects.
The Department of Health and Human Services of South Carolina is working with USC on the plans for the hospital. Funding in the among of $10 million is being awarded to USC for the preliminary architecture and engineering work.
It will be part of the campus of USC in downtown Columbia and will be next to the new School of Medicine. Banner printing is often used at such sites to inform residents of such significant projects and their benefits for a community.
The ground is expected to be broken on the new medical school next year and be completed in 2027. The hospital may open as early as 2028.
