What's Happening in Canonsburg, PA…

Canonsburg whiskey dinner celebrates more than just beverages

Sipping in top-shelf whiskeys and drawing in the flavors of local history will be on the menu at an upcoming fundraising dinner.

The Whiskey Rebellion Dinner is now in its 12th year. It is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Bradford House Historical Association, the group charged with maintaining the National Historic Landmark, David Bradford House.

The building was erected in 1788 by prominent lawyer David Bradford, who went on to become one of the instrumental leaders of the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794. Opposing a tax on whiskey, distillers, and farmers rebelled in what is thought to be the first big test of American federalism. Then president George Washington sent in troops to Pennsylvania to quash the uprising.

Bradford himself gathered 7,000 men who were poised to attack Pittsburgh. The city sent out a delegation and smoothed things over by offering three giant barrels of whiskey to the men, who proceeded to drink them. The attack never happened.

Single tickets are $150, and there are several other sponsor packages available. The dinner begins with a reception at 6:00 pm followed by a dinner at 7:00 pm. The meal features a brand of rare, specialty whiskey. Sponsors of events such as this one can use local printing services to print menus and banners.

The 12th annual Whiskey Rebellion Dinner is scheduled for Thursday, October 8, from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm at the Hilton Garden Inn Pittsburgh/Southpointe, 1000 Corporate Drive in Canonsburg.
