Canonsburg candy company becomes online smash
A Canonsburg business is getting national exposure, all thanks to an online app.
Sarris Candies, a staple of Canonsburg for more than 50 years, captured the eyeballs of millions of the users of the new video-sharing social media app TikTok.
It started when someone who works at TikTok noticed online Sarris Candies’ unique menu items called “bash cakes.” These are cupcakes made of milk chocolate and sold with a miniature hammer. The hammer is used to “bash” the cakes to reveal that the inside is filled with chocolate-covered pretzels.
As a Halloween present, the TikTok staffer ordered almost 2,000 of the bash cakes and had them sent to TikTok users all over the country, including Hawaii. It took Sarris Candies three weeks to make, individually package, and send off the cakes.
When the users got the gifts, they immediately posted videos of themselves hitting the cupcakes with the hammers. The videos went viral. In many of the videos, the Sarris Candies logo design can be seen.
Sarris Candies owner Bill Sarris told The Intelligencer that the level publicity goes beyond anything they have experienced before, and has put them “on a national stage.”
Sarris Candies is located at 511 Adams Avenue. Its hours are Mondays to Saturdays from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm, and Sundays from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm.
