Bradford House expands eligibility for yearly poster contest

Every year, the Bradford House Historical Association sponsors a couple of poster contests to celebrate and bring attention to Western Pennsylvania’s history, and this year sees more students eligible to participate, including some from McMurray.

The Bradford House’s poster contests are open to public, parochial, home, and cyber-schooled children in middle or high school. This year participation in the annual contests has been extended and now includes students from Allegheny, Fayette, Greene, Washington, and Westmoreland counties.

Students must first register in January or February online. They then need to take the period of 1750-1850 in Western Pennsylvania, and using a trifold standard-size display board, create a presentation. Participants have until early March, with the exact date not released yet, to transport their projects to Bradford House in Washington.

Flyer printing is often used by schools to inform students of contests such as this one.

Winning projects will be exhibited on March 29 at Washington & Jefferson College’s Symposium on 18th Century Life and Customs in Western Pennsylvania, titled ‘An Evening with Alexander Hamilton’.

The poster competition is divided into a middle school division and a high school division, the former being for grades 5-8 and the latter for grades 9-12. In each division, the top five entries will be awarded cash prizes. Prize money is provided by Betsy and Bill West of Northwood Realty Services.

Information regarding contest requirement is available to teachers and students through an outreach program.
