Flyer Farm is a short walk from the main campus of the university. It is on six tennis courts that once were the property of NCR. On the farm there are bees, chickens, vegetables, fruits, a large composting operation, and an orchard. The daily farming is handled by a team of students from a range of majors. The students from Sinclair plant vegetables and herbs native to their home countries and tend to them as part of the curriculum with the help of the student workers from UD.
Professor of English and English for speakers of other languages at Sinclair College, Kirsten Goeller, said:
“When the opportunity to collaborate with Flyer Farm presented itself, I knew I wanted to plan a service-learning project that included my students.”
She added that her students can apply prior knowledge and experience to grow familiar and usable crops as well as to learn new skills. She said that this is a hands-on approach to learning which is ideal for students learning a new language.
