A large-scale archaeological investigation of the site of Lichliter Village in Dayton has been completed.
The city Commission approved the study in November 2022. Work began on the study in 2023. The conclusion of the study resulted in nine Boxes of artifacts of a cultural nature being delivered to the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery for the purposes of archiving.
The Lichliter Village, which is on the National Historic Register, was identified in the late 1960s. Findings from the study revealed that it had been the site of a largely forgotten dairy farm from the 19th century and that it had small cultural features and materials such as animal bone and charcoal.
It was determined by the study that the property, which spans 126 acres, is suitable for future development, not including the area which contains the actual site of the village. The results of the study were approved by the State Historic Preservation Office.
News of the completion of such significant studies and their value for a community are often disseminated throughout a city with flyer printing.
Shelley Dickstein, city manager, said that the study is an important step in honoring the history of the region and the people who lived in the area prior to the current generations. Dickstein added that it will create a pathway for future development that will be of great benefit to the community.
