The DC Flyers of the University of Dayton will be receiving $25,000 from the AES Ohio Foundation towards a summer internship of 10 weeks in Washington, D.C.
The internships range from working at non-profit organizations and federal agencies to placements of Capitol Hill. The funding from the Foundation helps to support the commitment of UD to providing students with housing and a stipend to cover personal expenses, transportation, and food.
Laura Cotten Howell, program manager of the DC Flyers, said that this funding over the years from the AES Ohio Foundation is crucial to the success of the DC Flyers program. She added that the program encourages young people to enter public service which is important for a string society to be maintained. She said that their time in DC enables them to gain a clearer understanding of a potential vocation in their lives.
The DC Flyers were established as an initiative of the University Honors Program in 2014. Since inception, 162 students have gained hands-on experiential learning opportunities in public advocacy, policy, and service, among other areas. Many alumni of the program have started careers in the sector of public service and have taken roles related to and in government at the local, state, national, and international levels and with non-profit organizations and other associations.
