Novelis is partnering with DRT Holdings, LLC, a manufacturer in the Dayton area, to increase the adoption of alloys that are highly recycled in aluminum beverage can ends. The founder of DRT invented the pop-top that is used on aluminum cans.
A “unialloy” design is the goal of the partnership so that cans of beverages can be made from content that is up to 99 percent recycled. Typically, the top or end of an aluminum can is made from a different alloy.
Both companies focus on metal Packaging. DRT provides manufacturing equipment that is high-speed for beverage can ends and can produce up to 3,000 ends per minute. The company was previously called Dayton Reliable Tool and Manufacturing and has been in operation since 1949 here in Dayton. Novelis focuses on low-carbon, highly recycled content for flat-rolled aluminum sheet products.
The VP of innovation at DRT, Brandon Rinehart, said that DRT will be building on its longstanding legacy of innovation with a focus on smart engineering and sustainability. The senior vice president and chief commercial officer at Novelis, Greg Schlicht, added that this partnership is an important step for his company in speeding up the transition to an aluminum beverage Packaging industry that aligns more with a circular economy.
