San Bernardino spends evening with Mendelssohn

San Bernardino classic music aficionados will want to save a spot on their Calendars for The Redlands symphony orchestra’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream in January’ coming in a week’s time.

The concert will be a blend of the real world and a romp through the fantastical world of Mendelssohn. Ransom Wilson will be the conductor, and special artist for the evening will be Daniel Yu.

The program will begin with A Midsummer Night’s Dream Overture in E. major, op.21 composed by Felix Mendelssohn when he was only 17 years old. The orchestra will then accompany Daniel Yu, this year’s Concerto Competition winner, in Peter Tchaikovsky’s Piano concerto No. 1 in B-flat Minor, op.23.

The final piece will be Mendelssohn’s Symphony No.4 in A major, op. 90 Italian. The orchestration is for strings, two trumpets, two horns, two oboes, two flutes, two bassoons, two clarinets, and timpani.

Mendelssohn composed this symphony while travelling in Italy in 1833. The first two movements of the symphony are a lively allegro vivace, followed by a more somber march-like andante con moto. The third is the sensual but at the same time humorous take on Goethe’s Lilis Park love poem. The finale movement, Saltarello, is said to be a musical postcard with its quick triple-meter “little hop” and tarantella themes.

The performance will be at Memorial Chapel 1200 E. Colton Avenue in Redlands on January 20, starting at 8:00 pm.
