San Bernardino hosts animal care event for children
San Bernardino’s Devore Animal Shelter is hosting an event for children in which they will have the opportunity to read to cats and dogs this January.
The Telling Tails Reading Program is made possible by San Bernardino County, thanks to a partnership between its Animal Care and Library departments.
Aimed at children between the ages of 6 and 17, the intended benefits of the event are twofold: It helps children level up their reading skills while also providing enrichment to pets waiting for their permanent adoptive homes.
The program is also intended for children to build their confidence and to foster empathy and compassion for the animals.
A parent or guardian is required to be present during each reading session for the entire hour-long commitment.
After a brief orientation with their grown-up caretakers, participants will be seated in a side-facing position 2-3 feet away from the kennels. Physical contact with the animals is prohibited. Chairs and books will be provided, though children can also bring their own books.
There is a daily maximum of five readers per session and registration can be made online.
Community events like this may choose to use print shops to create signs, informational posters and promotional materials.
The Telling Tails Reading Program event is happening on January 7 from 4 pm to 5 pm at the Devore Animal Shelter at 19777 Shelter Way Devore in San Bernardino.
