Musical fantasy comes to San Bernardino
San Bernardino Valley College is hosting Shrek the Musical this December.
Shrek the Musical may be based on the Academy Award-winning 2001 animated film of the same title, but it has carved a name for itself in the musical theatre space, as it is the winner of a Tony Award.
The fairy tale comedy features new songs from Jeanine Tesori, known for her work in musicals like Caroline, or Change and Thoroughly Modern Millie. The script for the stage adaptation, chock full of humor, is penned by David Lindsay-Abaire.
Staying true to the theme of the original film, the musical serves as a parable for not judging a book — or in this case, an ogre — by its cover. Finding the inner beauty in the most unlikely places is what defines the journey of Shrek, the main character ogre who befriends a wisecracking donkey to rescue a rough-and-tumble princess. The three adventurers encounter colorful characters along their journey, including a lord with a bad attitude, a sentient gingerbread cookie who yearns to be free, and dozens of other outcasts ripped straight from a bedtime story.
Musicals like this may choose to use brochure printing for audience programs and season schedules.
Shrek the Musical is playing from Thursday, December 4 through Saturday, December 6 at 7:00 pm each night, and a matinee show on Sunday, December 7 at 2:00 pm. Ticket prices range from $12 to $18. The performances are happening at the San Bernardino Valley College Auditorium at 701 S Mount Vernon Ave in San Bernardino.
