Orchestral music to have an American feel

Soon, San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra will present its third concert of the 2014-2015 season.

Free of charge to attend, the upcoming instalment will be called ‘Musical Genius in America’. Pianist Yana Reznik will be performing Gershwin’s ‘Rhapsody in Blue’. Written in 1924, it is a combination of classical musical elements blended with a touch of jazz.

The orchestra will also be performing William Grant Still’s Symphony No.1 – Afro-American Symphony. The work was the first composed by an African-American to be performed by a large orchestra.

The piece is composed of 4 movements: the first is a seven-and-a-half-minute piece entitled ‘Longing’. The second part is called ‘Sorrow’ and lasts just over five minutes. The third section is a three-minute piece call ‘Humor’, and the last one is called ‘Aspiration’ and lasts over eight and a half minutes.

Also on the program will be a selection of Scott Joplin ragtime classics, such as the Maple Leaf Rag and The Entertainer. Duke Ellington fans can look forward to a medley of his works, which will include such songs as ‘Mood Indigo’, ‘Satin Doll’, and ‘Take the A Train’. Printing companies have been turning out Posters of these American icons for years.

The concert will be held Saturday, February 7, from 7:30 pm to 10:30 pm at the California Theatre of the Performing Arts in San Bernardino.
