San Bernardino opera lovers will be offered a “sung” ballet next month as California State University San Bernardino.
Its opera company will be offering a performance of Kurt Weill’s ‘The Seven Deadly Sins’, a satirical take on sibling rivalry and family life in general. The libretto was by Berthold Brecht. ]
The story centers around two sisters, Anna I and Anna II, and the former is a singer while the latter is a dancer, though there are early hints that the two characters may actually separate instances of the same person. In any event, the “sisters” and their family ruminate on their circumstances and their dreams of a brighter future. Those dreams eventually lead to seven scenes that are devoted to the adventures of the Annas. They appear in seven different American cities, all of which is part of a grand plan to build a little house.
Those planning to attend may want to brush up on playwright Kurt Weill and the circumstances under which the ballet/opera was penned to gain a better perspective on the performances. They may also want to have business card printing done ahead of time for sharing with other attendees.
The opera will be presented Friday, February 5, at 7:30 pm on the CSUSB campus, 5500 University Pkwy, San Bernardino, in Recital Hall. Tickets can be purchased online for $15. Parking will cost an additional $6.
