A fulfillment center in La Palma, which fills orders for lifestyle and fashion brands like Outdoor Voices and Bonobos, has put robots to work.
Quiet Logistics recently opened its La Palma center, which covers 440,000 square feet. This is the first West Coast location for the company, and serves as a blueprint for the future. Quiet Logistics currently plans to build up to seven such centers by 2022, locating them near population centers.
This runs counter to some people's thinking, who believe these centers should be located in rural areas where there is more open space than in cities. However, Bruce Welty, the CEO of Quiet Logistics, said it's better for the company to build in urban areas, where there are more people and sources of labor.
At the La Palma facility, the robots that are in use were designed by Locus Robotics, which is a spinoff of Quiet Logistics. Given the vast size of the building, it's important to have robots that can cover the distance quickly, and climb up to high shelves humans cannot reach.
Welty noted that next-day and same-day delivery has been popularized by Amazon.com, making it necessary for other fulfillment organizations to turn to automation to meet their customers' expectations. Many of Quiet Logistics' fashion clients have large numbers of customers in Los Angeles, he said. Businesses like this may turn to Logo Design to work innovations like this into their symbols.
