La Palma breaks ground on local project

La Palma is getting ready to start a project on some of its street medians.

Members of the La Palma City council recently broke ground on the Various Median Island Project. The aim of the project is to update 30 of the city’s medians with landscaping that is drought resistant.

The project dates to 2018, when the city looked for a landscape designer to create a median that would be resistant to drought. The request for bids was expected to go out in early 2020, but was deferred when the pandemic broke out. The city issued its request for bids in September 2023, noting the bids had to be received by November. Eight firms attended the pre-bid meeting, which was mandatory, and two of the firms submitted bids. In February 2024, the city awarded the contract to Unispec Construction, Inc. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has given the city a grant of $2m for the project.

The upgrades will help reduce water usage, improve the visual appeal of the medians, and ensure all the medians in the city have a standard appearance. The vegetation being used includes trees and plants that can tolerate drought, and the design includes a drip irrigation system and a cobblestone stream bed.
