Double the fun with two events in La Palma

La Palma is pairing up two special events into one fun day.

National Night Out (NNO) is a nationwide event, and it is usually celebrated in early August, though some communities celebrate on a different day. The first Night Out took place in 1984, and involved almost 400 communities across 23 states, and about 2.5 million neighbors.

The objective of the event is to get neighbors to get to know each other and build camaraderie. Cookouts, parades, block parties, and similar community events became part of the evening, which soon expanded to include youth events, seminars, safety demonstrations, and particularly, visits from police and other emergency personnel. Building a working relationship, free of mistrust and misunderstanding, between the police and the people they protect is a vital part of the event.

In addition to the party, La Palma is also planning a concert featuring Stone Soul. The eight-piece band has an impressive horn section, and is a tribute band that plays classic Motown and Soul music. Audiences will dance The Twist, The Mashed Potatoes, and The Jerk to the hits of artists like The Four Tops, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Smokey Robinson, James Brown, Otis Redding, and many others.

National Night Out is scheduled for August 1, starting at 5.30 pm. The concert is set for 6.30 pm, and the fun takes place at Central Park on Walker Street. Organizers of outdoor events like this will often work with banner printing to create weather-resistant decorations for the venue.
