Astronaut camp to blast off in La Palma

Children interested in learning about space are invited to a NASA Jr. Astronauts Camp at the city recreation and community center in La Palma this July.

Touted as an academy of future space explorers, this collaboration from Mad Science and the NASA Langley Learning Center will feature participants working in teams to race rockets made out of balloons and go on hypothetical space missions.

Building model rockets that soar over 300 ft and creating homemade comets and space viewers will also be part of the lesson plan.

The NASA Langley Learning Center invests in learning opportunities in programs across the United States for students interested in science, technology, engineering and math. The effort is also to help America’s future remain productive in the STEM fields.

Mad Science is a children’s science education program that utilizes hands-on activities to create fun STEM learning opportunities.

Children ages five to 12 are encouraged to join the program. There is a $30 fee to help pay for materials that is due at the beginning of the first class.

Science classes like this may choose to use Print shops to create instruction sheets and supply lists.

The NASA Jr. Astronauts Camp is happening from July 20-24 from 9 am to noon at the City of La Palma Recreation and Community Center at 7821 Walker St in La Palma.
