Local teacher is among the top in the State

La Palma-based Zoila Gallegos is one of the Los Angeles County Office of Education’s (LACOE)16 County Teachers of the Year. This is the competition’s 34th year.

Gallegos was chosen from the 72,000 K-12 educators in the county. She has been a teacher for 23 years and currently works at Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall School as a Literary Specialist.

If her school is celebrating this grand honor, they may enlist a local Print company for banner printing or poster printing to hang around the school.

The announcement was made this month. Each teacher was presented as an outstanding educator who serves with praiseworthy distinction by Arturo Delgado, the LACOE Superintendent. Each also received a $1,000 honorarium.

The annual competition is organized by the LACOE, and presented by LACOE in partnership with California Credit Union, as well as other sponsors. Contestants were judged on essays, lesson plans, résumés, letters of reference, and interviews.

The Teacher of the Year is the largest competition of its kind in the state. County winners advance to the California Teachers of the Year competition, which takes place later in the fall. The five winners of this competition will be named in November. One of these winners is chosen to represent the State in the National Teacher of the Year contest next spring.
