Every March college basketball goes a little crazy, and now La Palma teens can join in the fun.
The craziness is “March Madness,” the National College Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I men’s basketball tournament that started in 1939. Schools classified as Division I award the most athletic scholarships, generally have the biggest budgets for athletic activities, and have the largest student bodies.
March Madness is a single-elimination event that has 68 starting teams. In such a tournament, a team that loses is eliminated immediately. There are seven rounds that before the national champion is crowned, and the penultimate round is the “Final Four,” when the last four remaining teams play.
La Palma will be the site of its very own version of March Madness, when young people will have an opportunity to show their skills, or take part in a tournament. The skills challenge will allow players to show off their three-point shots, layup, passing, and dribbling skills. The “King of the Court” tournament will give them the opportunity to display their abilities in defensive and offensive positions. When events such as this are scheduled, organizers can use flyer printing to create handouts for audience members.
March Madness is set for March 11, from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm, at Central Park. The contest is open to teens 13 to 17 years of age, and a minimum of 10 players must be registered for the event to go forward. Parents must sign a waiver for their child to participate.
