The City of La Palma plans to celebrate Arbor Day by—what else?—planting a tree. However, that's only one of the activities planned.
J. Sterling Morton started Arbor Day in 1872, and today all fifty states, plus some territories, and Puerto Rico, celebrate the occasion. Morton's idea was to create a day to celebrate those who plant trees and take care of them.
In La Palma, in addition to the tree planting, officials will present the winners of the coloring and art contests, and craftspeople will be on hand with their creative work. The coloring contest is open to children in several levels: Pre-Kindergarten; Kindergarten; first through third grade; and fourth through sixth grade. The question all the kids need to consider is what kind of imaginary tree they'd plant if they could. Officials can use banner printing to decorate the venue for fun celebrations like this.
La Palma has also been named a “Tree City USA” by the Arbor Day Foundation. This award goes to communities that have been recognized by the foundation for their success in planting and caring for their trees. Each year, La Palma updates the foundation on the tree projects it has finished during the preceding twelve months. La Palma has won this honor for 21 consecutive years.
The fun goes from 4.00 pm until 6.00 pm, on April 23, in Central Park. The deadline for entries for the coloring contest is April 15.
