La Palma gets ready for Arbor Day

La Palma, which is a Tree City USA, will plant a tree to celebrate Arbor Day 2018. In addition, people can enjoy crafts, and learn who the winners are of the coloring and art contests.

J. Sterling Morton started Arbor Day in 1872, and today the occasion is celebrated throughout the nation. The city is looking for sponsors including organizations, community groups, and individuals who would be interested in helping to buy new trees. A form is on the city's website; people may donate any amount they choose, and send their check along with the completed form to the La Palma Recreation & Community Service Department, or drop it off at the department located at 7821 Walker Street.

In order to be named a Tree City, a municipality must have some sort of department or board that manages trees, have developed an ordinance for tree care, have a forestry program in place, and the community must observe Arbor Day.

The Growth Award is given to those communities that participate at an even higher level, and this year, La Palma has won this award, in addition to being named a Tree City USA for the 21st time in a row.

The party starts at 4:00 pm and goes until 6:00 pm tomorrow, April 24, at Central Park. Events like this can thrive if organizers work with banner printing companies to decorate the venue.
