La Palma city officials recently announced they have completed the first draft of a Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP), and would like to hear from the public about the effort this coming week.
The plan is described as a five-year strategy that will help identify and reduce threats to the community from human-caused and natural disasters alike. Safety officials, city staff members, stakeholders, technical consultants, and other agencies affected by disasters in La Palma worked on the plan. Comments and additional feedback were gathered from members of the La Palma community to make certain the plan aligns with the goals, concerns, and opinions of local businesses and residents.
The LHMP is designed so that the city can be proactive in the event of an emergency, rather than reacting to an event that has already occurred. The types of events the plan considers are drought; earthquakes and the liquefaction that can occur during them; dam inundation and flooding; climate change; and severe weather, including wind and extreme heat.
The plan will be discussed in detail soon, and everyone is invited and encouraged to come to the meeting of the city council where the plan will be on the agenda. Attendees will be able to talk to councilmembers directly.
The meeting is set for Tuesday, October 1, starting at 7:00 pm at the City Hall. Flyer printing can be used to create handouts for attendees of events like this.
