A new open-air facility has been introduced at a school near La Palma.
Cypress College in Cypress, which serves many students from neighboring La Palma, recently announced it has increased the study space available on campus by opening a new facility.
The Outdoor Student Study Space covers 4,500 square feet and has room for 70 students. In order to establish this space, the school followed the method many restaurants have used to allow for proper social distancing measures. The school has also expanded the availability of a free Wi-Fi program it began when it was forced to close the campus.
Explaining the school's thinking, JoAnna Schilling, its president, said school officials understood many students are now taking classes, doing homework, or studying in their cars because others in their household are also attending class remotely, or, in the case of many parents, working from home, limiting internet availability. The new outdoor space is safe, and has reliable WiFi.
The space is available Monday through Thursday from 7:30 am until 10:00 pm, and from 7:30 am until 5:00 pm on Friday. Students may use the school's mobile app to reserve a spot, or simply walk up. In order to use the space, students need to use the app for a wellness check, and have to follow safety and health regulations. Protective barriers, charging stations, and restrooms are available.
