Planetarium hosts nights with the stars

Local stargazers should be sure to put an upcoming Astronomy Night, scheduled for early June, on their calendar.

Mesa Community College (MCC) is inviting everyone to visit its state-of-the-art planetarium for half hour presentations every month, but it will be taking a break over summer, so this will be the last opportunity to look to the night sky for a couple of months.

On clear nights, telescope viewing of the planets, moon, and other celestial sights will also be available. Although the events are free, it’s a ‘first come, first serve’ format. Also, taking photos is well worth the effort for skilled photographers looking for unique poster printing opportunities.

The planetarium, which opened in August 2008, has a 53-seat capacity. Although used primarily for MCC astronomy classes, it offers many shows geared to children from kindergarten through high school. In addition to videos, the planetarium has the capability of displaying stars, moons, and planets of the night sky in many ways. Any large group interested in astronomy can make reservations to attend the planetarium.

The next presentation will be on June 6; after that, starwatchers will have to wait until September. Shows are presented every half hour from 6:00 pm to 9:30 pm, 1833 W. Southern Ave, Mesa Community College. The Planetarium is on the south side of the Physical Science building, and is clearly marked.
