Mesa environmentalists to save local cacti

Green-minded folks in Mesa and in surrounding towns may want to mark their Calendars as Natural Restorations will be hosting the 6th Annual Save Our Saguaros Replanting & Veteran's Day Celebration in early November.

Arizona is home to the saguaro cactus, a tall-fingered species native to the Sonoran Desert. Over the past two centuries the plants have become synonymous with Arizona while simultaneously declining in population, with wildfires and the infiltration of non-native invasive plant species largely to blame for its dwindling numbers.

The restoration event this year will focus primarily on replanting, although volunteers are more than welcome to clean up around existing plants or pull up weeds in their vicinity. Efforts to preserve the cactus plants might involve removing trash, graffiti, invasive grass, and anything else impeding their growth.

Anyone wishing to participate can add themselves to the group by visiting the Natural Restorations website and clicking the Take Action link. The exact location and specific address will be provided once volunteers have registered.

Those who volunteer for restoration projects like this often go to nearby Print shops and place printed Flyers in their workplaces and around their neighborhoods in responsible places.

The event will take place on the weekend before Veteran's Day, which is Saturday, November 8, from 8:00 am till noon, in the desert around Mesa.
