Mesa shows its class with brass

In a few days, Mesa’s Symphony of the Southwest will be presenting an evening of musical entertainment, as it hosts the Serenades & Studies concert.

One unique twist will be that four members of the orchestra’s French horn section will be performing Robert Schumann's Concert piece for 4 Horns and Orchestra, Op. 86.

One of the soloists will be Matthew Zimmerman, who has played the instrument since he was eight and has performed all over the world. He joined the Symphony of the Southwest in 2009 after he performed with many of the local orchestras around the region.

Alex Manners, another French horn player is currently completing his doctorate in horn performance and pedagogy at Arizona State University. Martha Sharpe although drawn to the piano at the age of four, changed to the horn by the time she was ten. After getting her Masters in Horn from Rice University, Sharpe played in Spain with the Royal Symphony Orchestra of Seville for two years and has played with this orchestra since 1999. Trent Bender rounds out the foursome. After getting his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance and playing the horn professionally for 12 years, Bender joined the orchestra in 2014.

Also on the program will be Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik K. 525, Dvorak’s Serenade for Strings, and Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 Unfinished.

All horn lovers will want to mark their Calendars for February 27. The performance is scheduled to begin at 7:30 pm at the Mesa Arts Center’s Piper Theater, 1 East Main Street, Mesa.
