On January 20, in commemoration of the birthday anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, East Valley will host the East Valley Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade and Festival. Over 5,000 people are expected to attend.
Floats, bands, dance groups, businesses, organizations, and community groups will band together and stroll through Downtown Mesa. The actual route begins at Martin Luther King Jr. Way on Center Street. The parade will proceed on down Center Street and will turn west when it reaches First Street. It will then disband at Robson.
Groups that come together for events such as this often get some banner printing done beforehand to either introduce themselves to the spectators, or state their causes or objectives.
After the parade, Downtown Mesa will hold a festival full of food vendors, music, midway games, carnivals, and the like. The parade will begin at 11:00 am, and the festival will go from noon until around 4:00 or 5:00 pm.
On January 25, the Mesa Arts Center, 1 E. Main Street, will present ‘We Shall Overcome’, which is a music tribute to Dr. King. The program, featuring Damien Sneed, will showcase African American music interspersed with parts of Dr. King’s speeches. The performance will be in the Piper Repertory Theater starting at 7:30 pm. Tickets will be $41.
