Mesa gets creative

Mesa’s Festival of Creativity Spark! is just around the corner. This free event celebrates the human imagination by showcasing Arizona performers and artists.

Live music from local bands will be emanating from two stages. Dark Sky and Aerial CaZo will be performing 14 times in the Mesa Contemporary courtyard. Six food trucks will be offering everything from kettle corn to tamales.

In total, 16 art cars, cycles, a few lowriders and hot rods will be on display. One art car, the ‘Desert Marlin’, will be built on-site. The metal and glass exterior design will be inspired by Sonoran Desert flora and fauna – which is cacti and succulents. Festival attendees will be painting the interior. Everyone will get to paint an interactive chalkboard car, too.

Guests will be creating food from clay for a classical still-life dining room table setting. Matt Smith’s kinetic sculptures, Jenneva Keyser’s ‘The Night Garden’, and an interactive digital art work called ‘Hello Lamp Post’ will be part of the event.

One-hour workshops will be available. Some of them will be in acrylics, metal, ceramics, beads, glass, tile, and improvisation. Light Rail Plays will be original plays created and performed during the event by teams of local youth.

Photographers can get photos that they can take to local Print shops for future poster printing, or for the city’s 2019 visitor’s guides.

The festival will run this Saturday, March 17, from noon until 11:00 pm and March 18 from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm at the Mesa Arts Center, 1 East Main Street.
