Evening of Indian music sets the September tempo

For an evening of traditional Indian music, Shahid Parvez Khan Academy of Music and Indo American Cultural Connect are inviting people from around the Mesa area to a performance of Legends of India.

This event, taking place early next month, will feature classical music performed by Indian sitar artist, Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan. He will be accompanied by Pandit Anindo Chatterjee on the tabla.

Khan plays Hindustani classical music with raga improvisational styling and added vocalist phrasing. He also plays the Etawah gharana, a traditional Indian instrument. He has been performing in public since the age of five, while Chatterjee has been playing the tabla (Indian drum) since he was five years old as well.

IAC Connect is an organization of volunteers whose aim is to promote Indian dance and classical music through developing local talent, partnering with like-minded cultural organizations in presenting programs such as this one. It also has been supporting educational presentations and workshops in Indian classical music and dance since 2008.

Tickets range from $25 to $100. Advanced sale of VIP tickets include a meeting with the artists. Photos taken during the meet-and-greet should make interesting subjects for any future poster printing.

The performance will run from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm on September 6 at the Piper Repertory Theater, 1 E. Main St., Mesa.
