Mesa families, whether they are Irish or not, will likely enjoy an evening of music from the Emerald Isles this weekend.
A performance of the popular ‘An Irish Christmas’ will be presented. The Kerry Dance Troupe will display Irish traditions and mythology through music, dance, and storytelling.
The dance will be led by Kevin Horton, who toured in Riverdance for six years. Music will be sung by the voice squad of Kerry Records, and Irish actress Sheelagh Cullen will be the storyteller and narrator. Other principle dancers in the troupe will include Ciaran Magquire, who debuted in Riverdance 10 years ago when he was 16, and Collette Dunne, who is the female lead dancer in Magic of Dance.
The performance takes the audience on a journey through an Irish Christmas with vignettes such as butter making, button making, and chasing the wren. Drawing down the half door will kick off traditional Irish dancing. Along with the storytelling and dancing, the evening will also include festive music played on flute, uilleann pipes, button accordion, bodhrans, and fiddles.
Familiar Christmas carols will be interspersed among traditional Irish Christmas songs. The costumes, lighting, and dance from the old country could be nostalgic subjects for postcard printing.
The event will be held at the Mesa Arts Center’s Ikeda Theater this Saturday, December 20, at 8:00 pm.
