Adaptation of epic poem taking stage in Mesa

An acclaimed theatrical adaptation of a classic literary piece is running at the Mesa Arts Center this month. For the first time, the city's Southwest Shakespeare Company is hosting Charlie Bethel's version of The Odyssey in Arizona. Printing companies may be seeing an increase in business as this local production outfit works to promote the show throughout the Phoenix area.

Bethel is a solo artist who has become well-known around the country for his performances as Beowulf. Just as he has already done in Orlando, Baltimore, and other cities, he is impressing Arizona audiences with his one-man act. This time, Bethel is starring as the main character from Homer's epic poem.

The Odyssey remains one of the most famous works to be handed down to the modern world from Ancient Greece. It follows a man named Odysseus as he attempts to return to his homeland, battling a host of creatures and even the underworld along the way.

Bethel is currently recreating the plight of Odysseus for theatergoers in Mesa. Although he is the main actor in the show, the Southwest Shakespeare Company is complementing his work by providing high-quality props, lighting, and sound effects.

Bethel's version of The Odyssey is taking place at the Mesa Arts Center (1 East Main Street). It began on Friday, September 6 and will continue through Saturday, September 21. The show mainly starts on weekend evenings at 7:30 pm, but some matinees are being offered as well.
